Built for Filmmakers

Impact in Action

A diverse group of filmmakers and audience members smile and pose for a group photo inside a small theater following a community film screening.

At Modest Film Society, impact is built through four core pillars: Education, Connection, Access, and Visibility.

Through screenings, workshops, networking events, and our growing filmmaker directory, we are creating real pathways for independent film in Sacramento.

Education happens through hands-on workshops and filmmaker Q&As that share craft and production insight.

Connection happens both in the room and beyond it - where directors meet cinematographers, producers meet editors, and crews form for new productions.

Access expands through the Modest Film Fund and our talent & filmmaker directory, giving emerging artists a platform to be discovered and hired.

Visibility happens on screen and online - where films premiere before live audiences and talent becomes searchable within the community.

When you’re part of our society:

  • Education becomes momentum.

  • Connection becomes collaboration.

  • Access becomes opportunity.

  • Visibility becomes premiere.

That ongoing cycle of Education, Connection, Access, and Visibility is building sustainable infrastructure for independent film in Sacramento.

Mission

To cultivate a thriving ecosystem for independent filmmakers in Sacramento by creating opportunities for education, collaboration, access, and visibility.

Vision

To position Sacramento as a recognized hub for independent film and emerging storytellers.

The Modest Film Fund

The Modest Film Society Film Fund is designed to move filmmakers from idea to screen in real time.

A portion of every ticket sold goes directly into the fund, and selected recipients are challenged to create a new short film to premiere at the following month’s screening.

But they’re not doing it alone.

Funded filmmakers receive hands-on support from the MFS team throughout the process - accountability, feedback, and creative guidance - along with direct access to mentorship and production insight connected to The Film Squad, an established Sacramento production company.

The goal isn’t just to hand out money; it’s to ensure films get finished.

By combining financial support with professional backing and a guaranteed exhibition platform, the Film Fund accelerates collaboration, builds confidence, and strengthens the pipeline of locally made films entering Sacramento’s creative economy.

Community & Culture

Modest Film Society is shaped by the people who gather within it.

Filmmakers don’t compete here - they show up for one another. Audiences don’t passively consume - they engage. Artists at different stages of their careers share space, share perspective, and share belief in the value of local storytelling.

There is an unspoken understanding in the room: that creative work takes courage, that growth happens in community, and that Sacramento’s stories matter.

The culture is built on generosity, ambition, and mutual respect.

Show up. Support local stories. Be part of what’s building.
